What it takes to attract the Christian vote

“I’m confident, in South Carolina, we will get our share of social conservative voters because of their fear of radical Islamic extremism, because of their belief in our biblical obligation to stewardship of our planet, and three, their belief in our biblical obligation to maintain the integrity and security of the state of Israel.”

John McCain trolling for votes in South Carolina

So this is what the Christian vote boils down to?

1.) We are scared of Muslim extremism

Which allows all candidates to conclude that they therefore may wage eternal war for possible peace thus extending Empire and building up the power of the State since it alone can save us from the scary Muslims. All of this with Christian consent.

2.) We believe in global stewardship

Which allows all candidates to conclude that they therefore may embrace the psuedo-science that teaches global warming which in turn allows them to give the State even more authority as it alone can save the planet.

3.) We believe in Israel

Absolutely, we must get all those Jews back to their homeland so the great Anti-Christ can arise and kill off 2/3 of the Jewish population. Supporting Israel will eventually trigger God’s eschatological plans and cause God to hit the ‘rapture button’ thus giving all us village idiots (um, er… I mean Christians) a way out of here before the world gets really bad.

I wonder if it is ok to be a Christian if you support a policy of dis-engaged containment regarding extreme muslims, think global warming is not about science but about Statist managed globalism, and think Israel as a Nation State is completely irrelevant to end times?

  1. Thank you!

Aside from the mindless devotion to Huckabee (and the nanny state), this is one of the toughest (topical) items I’ve come across when it comes to debunking the groupthink in which otherwise intelligent Christians participate. The position of first resort in foreign policy discussions is always “we have to protect Israel!”

I still can’t find any relationship between the UN-manufactured nation-state and the Biblical Israel, aside from a similarity in geography.

  2. Just received a review of your attending a Mike Huckabee rally. Could have told you what it
be. See, I graduated from OBU with Huck and
Susan McDougal. Was a Baptist pastor mainly in
Arkansas for 26 years. Was Nebraska field
representative for World Wide Pictures, the
Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in 1970.
Resigned a little rural non denominational
church in our county in 2002 over a letter to
editor in our county paper criticizing Huck
when he was running for re-election.
After 42 years in the ministry, I’m a synical
critic of most of what I see today.
Today CNBC showed the Arizona Baptist
Foundation. The Southern Baptist of that state
took the people for about $250,000. Time
prohibits me going into detail about what’s
going on in the SBC. Anyway, didn’t Jesus say
straight is the way, and narrow the way, and
few go in. Mike Huckabee is living proof that
the Bible is true. Go back to Jeremiah 17:
    5-10.

  3. Jim,

Thanks for writing. I’m sorry that you got ground between the millstones of Church politics. There is a great deal of that going around. I’m actually thinking of trying to write something that looks at how Church organizations are often power trips to individual egos and how if you get in the way of that ego … well, then, it sucks to be you.

It is interesting and perhaps appropriately ironic that Susan McDougal and Mike Huckabee went to school together. Next thing you are going to be telling me is that they dated. (smile)

I’ve been in the Pastorate just short a few months of 20 years now. I’ve seen all types of Pastors, including the gland hander Huckabee type. They are as slick as oil and leaves the same greasy feel whenever one comes away from having involvement with one of them. They are as sincere as the situation requires of them and then find a new sincerity in a different direction when the situation changes. (This was most recently seen in the Huckster when after years of pursuing policy benefiting illegal immigrants he took a vow in South Carolina to expel illegal immigrants … new situation / new sincerity.)

Well, take care Brother Glover and be of good Cheer for Jesus has overcome the World and the Huckabee types.

    Bret
