Today I received a unrequested and unsolicited complimentary “Victory Church Products” junk mail catalog in the mail today. On page 62 there was a European American products section. In that section I could purchase Church Bulletin covers honoring European American themes. There was a choice of ten I could choose from.
I could order a bulletin with the name and picture of the Andrews Sisters on the front cover. I could order a bulletin with the name and picture of Thomas Edison on the front cover. I could order a bulletin with the name and picture of Henrietta Cornelia Mears on the front cover. I could order a bulletin with the name and picture of Christy Matthewson on the front cover. I could order a bulletin with a picture of Dr. Rev. Benjamin Morgan Palmer on the front cover. I could order a bulletin with a picture of a older white woman kneeling at a church pew praying on the front cover. I could order a picture of a young white man holding a open bible in his left hand while picking up a communion cup with his right hand on the front cover. There were several others that were a little more generic.
I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like that before.
Isn’t Church supposed to be about Christ and not ethnic exaltation?
Patience, JetBrane. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before you get a catalog from http://www.blackandreformedministries.com, or from some other truly xtian bunch who will offer you some kinte cloth choir robes or gullah psalters or something else to which the men of the church can turn a blind eye. So take heart!
Actually, what I received in the mail was not bulletin covers for European Americans but rather for African Americans. I simply inverted their selling points and their covers to see if anyone would be outraged. None of the bulletin covers had European Americans on them. No Bulletin covers were offered like that. Instead what was selling was African American bulletin covers with African American names and personalities on the cover.
I was trying to make a point by using absurdity to illustrate absurdity.
The actual bulletin covers for sale had the following names and pictures on the front,
1.) Ethel Waters
2.) Dr. George Washington Carver
3.) Oseola McCarty
4.) Jackie Robinson
5.) Martin Luther King
As well as the generic ones I mentioned.
MLK, huh? Nothing like an adulterous, plagiarizing, neo-orthodox socialist revolutionary to adorn the cover of a church bulletin.
As an aside on Christy Matthewson, who had as one of his names, “The Christian Gentleman”, here is a short but interesting article on baseball Hall of Famers and the WWI Chemical Corp

The tigers were better than they played last year and have some good young pitching. I think they can win the Central. Sorry, there’s not a baseball category π
Jerry,
I’m a big Tigers fan. If they play well this year I can guarantee you that there will be a tigers category.
I’m to pessimistic about their pitching prospect to be hopeful that they will win the central. I’m of the opinion that Verlander will have to return to form and Bonderman and Willis will have to have big seasons if they are to win the central.
And then there is the bullpen which was just awful last year.
OK, you got me. And your point is well taken.
