Thus Ussher distinguishes
“two distinct powers established by God in these lands, one of which is of the keys committed to the church, the other of the sword entrusted to the civil magistrate; the former ordained to operate about the internal man, having an immediate relation to the remission and retention of sins; the latter ordained to operate about the external man, affording protection to the obedient, and inflicting external punishments upon the rebellious”
A Speech Delivered in the Castle-Chamber at Dublin the xxii of November, Anno 1622, pp.304
Although in this way we make the prince and priest guardians of both tables, and although the matter about which they exercise their office can be the same, still the form and mode of governing in it is distinct in every way. One extends itself only to the external man, the other to the internal; one binds or looses the soul; the other attends to the body and things pertaining to it; one has a special regard to the judgment of the future world, the other refers to the present retention or privation of some of the conveniences of this life.

James Ussher – Archbishop of Armagh (1580-1655) in a speech published with a controversial work against the Jesuit, Hybernus, defends the oath of fidelity which declared the king to be the sole supreme governor in the kingdom.

Pastor McAtee,
A great site you have here.
It seems you have read quite a bit of Kuyper. A quick question. If you had to pick one of the two *Abraham Kuyper: A Centennial Reader* or *Lectures on Calvinism* which would you recommend
Thanks!
Jerry,
I haven’t read the “Centennial Reader” so I’d have to recommend Lectures On Calvinism. I would especially recommend it to people who are unfamiliar with or only barely familiar with Worldview thinking habits.
The Centennial Reader is one more on the list to read.
Thanks for stopping by,
Bret

I’m working my way thru *Westminster’s Confession* by North. I always wanted to read Kuyper and I think he’d be a good compliment to this
Thanks for the help
Jerry
Jerry,
Is that a commentary on the Westminster Confession that North wrote?
The subtitle is *The Abandonment of Van Til’s Legacy*
I think it’s right up your alley. It is a 1st response to *Theonomy: A Reformed Critique*, WTS’s response to Bahnsen’s *Theonomy*. North wrote it in 91. My copy happens to be autographed. It responds to Klinean covenantal theology, natural law, R2Kt, WTS and Gordon Conwell. It’s a great read. I’m looking forward to *Lectures on Calvinism*.
Interesting.. I just tried to order Theonomy A Informed Response but had some trouble.
I know about the free books site that North has (I even Printed Gentry’s “He Shall Have Dominion” from there) but it would be nice to have one copy of each of North’s inventory.
So many books… So little time,
Another for the list is *COVENANTAL THEONOMY: A Response to T. David Gordon and Klinean Covenantalism* by Gentry. Gordon wrote in 1994 WTJ a *Critique of Theonomy:A Taxonomy*. It was a response that Gordon said couldn’t be answered. But it was, by Gentry. My pastor brings Gordon in as puplit supply occasionally but these things are never spoken of.
Theonomy An Informed Response is on my shelf but it was North’s 3rd response in a trilogy. The 2nd was *By What Standard* by Bahnsen
Read Gentry’s book. Devastating to Gordon. Read “By What Standard” by Bahnsen. Guess that means I’ve hit .666 on the trilogy. .500 if you count “Theonomy; An Informed Response.” The Detroit Tigers need somebody like me hitting clean up.
I also read the adumbrated version of Gordon’s piece in Modern Reformation. Somewhere I wrote a rebuttal to that article. Gordon was downright insulting in that piece and I don’t think I could be in the same room with him without asking if he had apologized yet for such a mindless piece.
Where in Pennsylvania do you live?

I liked your stuff on 70AD. I used 2 Sam 22 to help explain the cloud imagery to my wife. Lots of imagery from Ezekiel 1 in there too
