Faith & Blood

When I look behind across the sands of time,
Across the years, wondering what I might see
Of those whose blood is flowing in my veins,
And what there is of them that makes me, me.
Who were they, what did they do, what will I find

That shows me how the past has shaped my mind?

Did they put plow to earth and till the land,
Or march across it with sword in hand?
If I look hard enough, perhaps I’ll see
Someone back there who looks ahead to me.
And if our eyes meet now, in his tomorrow,

Would what he sees of me bring joy or sorrow?

But that knowledge I would have more than all
Is at what point in time he heard the call
Of Christ, and he could see
The faith God gave to him still lives in me.
And then, when I look ahead, that I will find

It living still in those who are mine.
